Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul encourages us to Press On in 3 blessed ways:
First, he reminds us that we have not attained spiritual, nor physical perfection. The trials we suffered through in 2016 refined and ready us for what God has planned in the future. Yet none of us can claim we have achieved the full maturity and perfection of Jesus of Christ. Therefore we must Press On!
Second, as we move forward we must forget those things which are behind us. Paul is stating that we must let go of all things that will hinder us from moving on. I like to think of it this way; you and I must release that which causes us to remain in the past to reach toward the future. Pain, past issues, people who have come and gone must be left so that we can move on.
Third, note with me that in these 3 verses the Word of God states “I press on” and “I press toward”. Paul is encouraging the church to no longer remain in the state they are in. They must consistently be moving forward as they proceed forward, toward the goal. God has called us to forget that which hinders, keep reaching forward, and press on!
2016 has been a year of abundant blessings, betrayal, and times of brokenness. My family and I are consistently blessed with our church family here at the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield!! We thank God for your prayers, out pouring of love, and wonderful support this past year. God’s mercy and grace has been evident in each of our lives. I am personally thankful for each one of you.
We have been active as church teaching the Word of God through many ministries. We have seen consistent spiritual growth in individuals and in families. We’ve experienced energetic messages from God’s Word and applied them faithfully.
There were exciting things taking place at First Baptist Church in 2016 and I pray we will see even greater things in 2017. As we PRESS ON!
