Kintsugi - (Japanese: golden joinery) or Kintsukuroi - (Japanese: golden repair) is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Christ performs a similar, yet Super Natural work in our lives as he does far more than repair us spiritually!
Everything in our world today seems to be disposable. We have disposable cups, utensils, water bottles, and even some of the vehicles made these days seem disposable. When I survey the business world it appears our workplaces and its workers can often times be seen as “disposable”. There are shorter and shorter tenures and few who have the opportunity to work for lengthy careers at one corporation. Our culture is ever shifting and many of our businesses change on a daily basis. There isn’t much value placed on the previously listed items since they are disposable. I often wonder if this mindset affects our relationships. Do we deem those around us disposable? Do we struggle with not having purpose or more importantly not understanding that we have great value? As, I was pondering this “disposable theme”, I found myself asking; “how can a wonderful God, the creator of heaven and earth use a sinner such as I? Am I just a disposable item in the grand scheme of God’s sovereign plan?” I was reminded that I am certainly not a disposable item with little value and neither are you! Our value is based upon who Christ is and who we are in Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul states in Ephesians 2:10; For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
Sure I fall short of the glory of God on a daily basis. Most assuredly I sin and often fumble through this thing called life, but that doesn’t make me any less valuable in God’s sight. This seemingly worthless container is exactly what God would choose to use. The world may discard, disregard, and dispose of a worthless container, but the One true God doesn’t. He is a gracious, merciful God who gave himself up for me. Jesus Christ, Son of God, came to this earth with a purpose and plan to redeem man. He is God in the flesh. He lived a faultless, sinless life proving he was the God man. He willingly gave up his own life upon the cross for your sin and mine. What a glorious truth! The True, Living God would give the most valuable thing he could give, his own precious life. That sacrifice, the perfect, for the imperfect gives you and I great value. You see our body, our mind, our very being may be fading away. It may often appear faithless and futile, but our lives are vibrant and valiant in Christ Jesus! All of it is a valuable treasure to God. You are such great worth to him that he would be willing to send his one and only son, Jesus Christ to die in your place. His perfect sacrifice on your behalf. You are a valuable treasure; defined by who you are in Christ Jesus! God will certainly use your talents, he will surely use spiritual gifts, and he can even use our “mistakes” for his eternal purposes. So next time you you think you are disposable or feel worthless, please remember that you are valuable to God, in Christ Jesus!
There a multitude of truths from the Word of God that confirm who believers are in Jesus Christ proving your value through our faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Here is a short list:
